Typography Advertisement

Had my first Typography Design class today. I fell asleep during the lecture ._.

However, by the end of the day, i deemed it as (one of) my favourite subject(s) of the semester, ergo the subject that i would like to score A in, by all means possible.

There's just something about typography that intrigues me. The way that letters can be arranged together to make structures or even represent images. The way different typefaces have their own individual personality. The way words can be designed to make a simple sentence hold more meaning than it ever could.

I'm not sure if i like typography because i love books. I mean, i've always had an affinity for reading stuff. (Except for terms and conditions. Who reads that anyway?) It's not that, however. It's the content, the meaning behind those words that gives you a certain sort of feeling. I'm being quite vague here, i know, but i just have this feeling when i read a certain passage or paragraph, like i can understand. I feel like i'm able to connect and truly recognize the meaning behind those words, and i love that sensation.

Anyway, back to Typography class. We had to produce a black and white newspaper advertisement for an MPH book sale (yay!) using the sales text given below:

I THINK we were given creative liberties, so i went ahead and mixed in whatever i thought would look interesting and out of the norm. The result i got was this:

Yeeeeeah. Not what you'd expect from a newspaper ad.

My brother said it looked like an ad for a jazz concert. A friend of mine said that it feels like every word is clamouring for your attention. Well, i'll just have to see what my lecturer thinks about it next week or so.

I can't wait to learn more. Maybe then i'll be able to do posters like these!

Type is the new hype,
